Welcome to Old Games That Don’t Suck Thursday. Each week I’ll write about a game that somehow influenced by life as a game developer and which I can totally recommend to you because the game is flippin’ sweet. It also has to be old or at least forgotten about until recently.

Chex Quest came out when I was in Middle School. It’s a DOS/Win95 game that is an obvious dress up of the Doom code with Chex cereal characters. Your character is a Chex square who fights the “Flemoid” aliens (a pun of phlegm, note there) and tries to get through every area in good health. A variety of non-violent weapons aide you in taking out enemies and finding keys to open up new areas.

The game was fairly straightforward but then again it was one of the first First-person shooters I ever played. It came in a box of Chex for free so it was easily accessible. It was also a very kid-friendly FPS in a time when most FPS shooters were being shunned by parents. The most violent weapon in the game was a spork, and I am still fairly sure it’s the only game that has this utensil as a weapon.

If you can dig up a copy of this game it’s great for a good laugh and a fun game by ID software that is rarely played these days. It’s also one of the only really, really good advergames you’ll ever play so go at it.

Also you apparently get 50 free hours of AOL with your install. NICE!
