As of late I’ve realized that people are finicky about WASD or arrow keys as their primary control scheme.  I even know I’ve gotten complaints about AZERTY keyboard layouts and not utilizing their keyboard layout, so I’m curious…

Once again, it’s a way for me to see how users play games.  I am definitely an arrow key guy, btw.

I use WASD mainly because of familiarity playing console games where the d-pad is always in the left hand.

  • Amy Zee

Wow! I’m shocked to see the results being near 50/50.

I’m typing this from a AZERTY-layout, and to show the problem, for QWERTY-users, try the following combination:

    - Up = Z
    - Left = Q
    - Down = S
    - Right = D

For jmtb02, just like above, try having the following combination of keys and it’s solved.

For me, It’s simple. I simply change the setting (in the Configuration Screen (Windows) or the System Preferences (Mac))to the American layout before I start a WASD-game and change it back after.

But for most people it’s not that simple. “What is a cofiguration screen?” Yeah, those kind of people.

Anyway, seeing the poll being of 50/50 at time of writing, it’s a little shock. But I don’t know what else to think… Great poll question, though. Keep going, jmtb02!

If I have to use the mouse and the keyboard in a game, I choose WASD. But if no mouse is needed I choose arrow keys…

I never thought the results would be 50/50, either!

  • http://darkcarrot9.blogspot.com/ Dark carrot9

    deinetely arrow.
they are in line, and easy to use one handed.
also if i use wasd, i loose my finger places

  • DVDe

I voted WASD, but my answer should be “it depends”.
If the game uses the mouse I hate using the arrow, keys because I need to use my left hand on the keyboard.
If the game doesn’t use the mouse, I prefer the arrow keys but I don’t mind using WASD because I’m already used to both.

  • elpenguino

if the mouse is involved, WASD.
if the mouse is uninvolved, i’m fine with both.

  • http://kjchustudios.webs.com ~ KJCHU

…just try ←↓↑→, WASD, and ZQSD in the game code.

  • Garrett

I personally use the WASD because it’s more comfortable while using the mouse.

  • henny123

I’m more of a WSAD fan myself.

And i just lost The Game.

  • llamas

same basic principle as others: WASD with mouse, and neutral without it, so i voted WASD.

  • http://gamewaystudios.com Vince

Henny123, you’re just mean. Did you really need to type that? And I agree with llamas.

  • 3.14159265

what is wrong with losing the game?
    i do it daily.

  • Flashbac

    i agree with elpenguino

  • ElephantTophat

I like WASD, but only because i’m a righty and using my left hand for my mouse/trackpad is harder, so Arrow Keys just doesn’t work out with me.

  • Gama11

meh, this poll needs another option – cause I use both. Normally arrows though.. But if you need the mouse to play, the only way to play a game “relaxed” is WASD.

The best way would be to be able to customize the controls in all games.. I think that’s not too much work?

  • http://- HazMat

@Pi, I disagree. Losing THE GAME is so annoying. Anyway, I prefer Arrow layout, and when playing a game, naturally try out arrow layout before WASD. The only time i prefer WASD is on a laptop with trackpad in a mouse based game, or with JKL for extra functions.

  • Kaz

I think this poll needs a “I don’t have a preference” option. As it is I agree with the others.

  • Matthew Bungmeister

I don’t like WASD at all, but some games force me to use it, which makes me mad <_<

I have the same problem as Dark Carrot, I lose my finger places, and I don't figure out that I have until, IT'S TOO LATE!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

    …..Yeah :)

  • Draconoid

I think the main thing is to create a custom key layout.

    But I prefer WASD.

  • ElMikkino

I prefer WASD, feels a lot better with a mouse, and when I play games that don’t require the mouse, I still use WASD, since the keys are bigger, anyways.

  • http://wordpress callmecotton

im a wasd guy but i play alot of first person shooters

  • EvilRebel

Depends solely on what other controls are included.

  • hiperson134

wasd when jkl, space, or the mouse is involved

    arrow when zxc is involved

  • Tama Yoshi

Actually, I am surprised that WASD controls are so disregarded. I honestly think it SHOULD be more accepted, seeing as classic video games use the D-PAD on the LEFT of the controller. I personally put the WASD key as directional buttons and arrow keys as command buttons when playing such games. It feels more intuitive. It’s also why, sometimes, when playing ROMs and such, the initial control schemes really mess me up. Here, I am trying to program a Super Mario World look-a-like (VERY look-a-like, if you ask me) and I do exactly that.

PS: No, not illegual roms… I have the games.

  • Rossco

The arrow keys are alright if you’re using those and nothing else, but the moment the mouse comes into it, WASD is the only way to play.

Anyone who says they “lose their place” with WASD hasn’t played enough games to be allowed an opinion.

  • http://gamewaystudios.com Vince

    @ Approximate π: I don’t know. I said it is?

  • Nico

You did not give enough information. Is is with mouse or jkl?
    Or with zxc?
I’m more of an arrow fan, though.

  • http://oujevipo.over-blog.fr/ Pierrec

same thing, Wasd if the mouse is involved. Arrow keys if not.
I’m an azerty user but Wasd isn”t really a problem since pressing maj+alt makes an azerty into a querty.

  • Daikenkai

    Make it interchangable. Simple, eh?

  • nadaaav

i’m left handed, so wasd is a lot easier.
i’m also used to fps’ and WoW (i’ve quit now, i swear!).
so wasd is definitely the way to go

  • Etsilihin

Arrox key wont prevent azerty users from playing your game.
Nothing turn me off as much as having to change my settings.

  • Scythe

The best games allow people to use either.
