    tetrisim

This weekend I had the opportunity to play Tetris Evolution, a game for Xbox 360.  It’s fairly Tetris-y, while not the best incarnation it is Tetris.  I love Tetris.

I booted up Marathon mode (the primary mode in the game).  For over an hour I played a rigorous game, placing blocks in their proper places and removing rows.  After a while the game got so fast that I couldn’t see the blocks even fall anymore.  It was almost purely block rotation and some minor shifting, as much as I could muster under the time constraint of block in motion to block settled.

Long story short, eventually I reached level 15 and beat it.  Then I got the Game Over screen.

Apparently the game only goes to 15 levels.  Once you beat the 15th level the game is over.  There’s no celebration screen, no unlimited level generation… just… game over.  Essentially I beat the game.  There’s no going beyond Level 15 so apparently I’ve must have maxed out.

    That makes me sad.

Throughout my life there has always been this sense of Tetris never ending.  My mind is tricked into thinking that my Tetris playing is just a journey towards infinity and I have to see how far I can get.  Really, it could be that game.  The game plays towards that sort of notion.  Faster and faster and faster the game can go, and that alone can be the fuel for level difficulty.  Sure, the idea that the game could somehow outpace the processor or whatever I can sympathize with… but I don’t think about that sort of thing when I play as a gamer.  So when I beat Tetris finally I don’t really feel like a winner.  I feel like I’ve broken something.  Reminds me of some way-too-easy Donkey Kong kill screen.

I don’t know if this is every version of Tetris or what, but that was a weird bittersweet night.

Well, your cannon base game’s infinte mode had an ending… but at least you get a celebration…

Glad to have a fellow Tetris fan out there. I’ve been playing it since I was a child, and when I started picking up modern games and realizing they had ends, I felt so depressed.

Only the modern ones have ends. All the older ones (Say, before Hold was introduced) are usually infinite.

If you want an easy in to something that will keep going, check out Survival mode on http://www.tetrisfriends.com
After level 20 it WILL say you’ve “won” but will let you keep going, albeit under an odd mode. The pieces will blink in and out, with increasing length on the invisibility. Sorry about the sadness of modern Tetris. =(

And Keep making the lovely flash games! Huge fan of your work.

Ahhh, i had the same feeling when I played Tetris DS Marathon. After I giot 200 lines, (at which I couldn’t see the bricks falling down, they were just there!) the game ended and I was all disappointed and such, but I found out that there was also an endless mode, so maybe that game does too! I hope you regain your love tetris and keep it! I love your games!

    Chuck Norris wins tetris

I’m not 100% sure, but I think that this shocking revelation has ended all hope for video games ever, once it gets out. THIS MUST REMAIN A SECRET! It will cause chaos if everyone were to know! Does this give infinity an end?

i love tetris, but the original version only goes to fifteen levels. there are some, however, that go to 20 and then have a bonus level that goes extra fast and makes the shapes momentarily invisible. its crazy hard…

I agree completely with Shirow, TetrisFriends is the absolute BEST online tetris game. There is no to shout “Clone!!” at your screen, because this one was made by the creators of Tetris.

Tetris DS doesn’t end, it just gets faster and faster. :D Forever, seriously. You get to level 20 then it loops around again with the same speed.

I know someone that is obsessed with tetris, and also has a hand-held tetris game where the level display only has 2 digits, and she told me that once she got to level 100, and the level display said 00. She came around the bend and started over, only now when it says 06, it means level 106.
